RE: Amelie
I also went to see Amelie at the Rivoli, if only to use up my double pass that I won watching too much Foxtel. It's not tv, it's Foxtel.. But I digress. Yeah, Amelie was good BUT...personally I found the ending a bit too 'Hollywood', as if when making it, they knew it would be a film marketed to a large foreign audience and crafted an ending to suit...obviously Amelie would get her man but a) did it have to take so long?? and b) just as she gets the nerve to go out after him, he returns and they get together, so she didn't really have to make much of an effort, did she?? That was kinda wimpy. I liked the start of the film more than the end, it flowed better. Generally subtitling pretty good. Dunno why they don't retain the original title which would be something like 'The fabulous destiny of Amelie Poulain' which as a nice ring to it.
Overall a good film, funny, romantic, looks nice on screen too. Garden gnomes travelling the world is a cute idea.
Fortunately no ugly audience incidents!! Pretty crowded cinema actually. Fortunately Rivoli had dried up after minor flooding previous week.
