george, Fourplay, Wed 24th/Fri 26th April 02

So, I thought DK and Droidy would have beaten me to penning a review for the concert we went to last Wednesday...but apparently not...

Yes, last Wednesday DK, Droidy and me went to see george, supported by Fourplay and Danielle Spencer at the Prince of Wales as part of george's Polyserena Tour.

Em's Digress: We had a quick dinner before, which was quite acceptable and cheap, and while chatting over dinner, I mentioned to DK that I reckon he should sign up for a Danish email address, so that the last 2 letters of his email address would be dk. Yes?? Eg. DK@danishthing.dk So who else agrees?? I wish there was a country which abbreviated to my initials...perhaps there is...YES!! there is!! Okay, so now I need an email address from Eritrea and I'll be set...do you think there would be any available email addresses in this war torn African country?? Hmmmm.....BB= Barbados, Girl Android= Gabon...and I seem to remember this being a review, many years ago...so where was I?? Oh yeah.

I'll let DK tell ya how we almost stumbled into the soundcheck, quite inadvertently...that was fun!!

I also went to see these three artists at my government funded uni on the Friday night. Yeah, I like george and everything, call me a fan, but don't go thinking that I'm some kind of stalker coz I saw them twice in 3 days...we'd bought the tix for Wed then about 2 weeks later they announced a show at Deakin Uni, students tix at $8, how could I not go?? Big hello to Alicia, Fiona, Julie and Robyn who I went with on Fri.

Danielle Spencer, yeah, whatever. Very Double T. Or should that be MIX 101 now??

Fourplay were so good, they played their instruments with such enthusiasm and vigour and caught much of the crowd off guard I think, against expectations of what kind of support band they would be. The highlight for me(and someone else) was Jeff Buckley's 'Grace', the way they played it was almost as if it had been written for strings in the first place. I liked the way they just walked onto the stage, sat down and started playing and let the crowd realise that they had started and they they should be listening!! They also played the Beastie Boy's 'Sabotage' on Fri which was interesting. I would like to see them again, but perhaps in a more intimate setting, or if not that, then at least somewhere with acoustics designed for their kind of sound. The Deakin accoustics didn't suit them at all, worked against them really. It was in 'the Caffe', just a big open place not particularly designed for bands but large enough to accomodate numbers. But yep, that was some good listenin'.

george are a talented mob, they really are. Their set on Wed was longer than Fri and in a different order too, Fourplay joined them on both nights for 4 songs, but again, showing how diverse george's lineup is, it was 4 different songs on Fri than Wed. At uni, Fourplay joined them for all popular numbers I'm pretty sure, Spawn, special ones, Polyserena and 1 other.

Main problem at uni was the kinda dodgy sound, it could have been better, and the loudness of the crowd. It was kinda ridiculous, and ticked the band off. All other bands I've seen at uni have been so loud that they drown out the conversation, but since george's style of music is softer and creates a particular mood, quietness would have been nice. They kinda asked people to keep it down a bit, and Fiona did her bit for anyone who's ever been shitty at drunken teenyboppers by politely telling 2 dudes infront of us to shut up!! Yeah 4 Fi!!

Despite bad sound, you can't fail to recognise good musicianship and great songs, and it was all there for the taking. Katie Noonan does such a great job, I know that they are a five piece band and should share the glory, but she sings so effortlessly, you can't help but devoting all your attention to her. Her bro Tyrone, sporting a bizarre haircut, was also quite a passionate stage presence. Despite wearing the same top both nites, maybe he washed it on Thurs...

Anyway, I don't want to extend this into some huge long review, but overall a good nite, I left both concerts feeling pretty chirpy and with a bit of a buzz, and was singing george songs for the next two days!!

Look for comments later, when DK/Droidy post theirs.

... I got in by all of 45 minutes? (: It did take me a fair while to type up and even after all that none of it makes any sense to me! I'm glad you could remember more of what they played and stuff, cos my memory, in my old age is failing me... hang on, you're two days older than me, it can't happen like this!

Your review is everything mine wanted to be, with atmospheric details and set lists. And hey, if your feet were so sore, then what about DK's, u stood on his!! Haha.

Hey, did u c the pic on 4play's website?? Someone has a suspiciously bad mullet, that has since been trimmed. What a relief.

All good.

Hey, while still on topic of george, I was mentioning to a friend today that I went to see george in concert last week, when another classmate who had overhead the end of the conversation leaned over and asked disbelievingly 'You went to see George Michael in Concert??'

Erm, no.

That's all. Can't have me commenting too much to my own reviews, can we now??
