Matrix Revolutions

You knew it was coming........ You know if you click the link that you will have spoiler type action........

... so here we are....... 4:06am.... just after seeing the Matrix Revolutions.... I loved it.... it has its faults and some parts I disagree with... if it is possible to diagree with someone else's story... It is shit loads better than Reloaded in the CG department... no more wincing at the bad CG Neo... Sit back and enjoy the ride...

so spoilers and all... here we go.....

I was wrong........ and right. Annoying to be sure, but I never expected to get the whole thing right.

After a short "quiet" section at the beginning, picking up the pieces from the end of the last movie... we both into picking up the plot threads (from Reloaded and Enter the Matrix) and let's face it... there were quite a lot of them.

How did Neo stop the sentinels?
What is up with Neo and Bain now?
Where are Niobe and Ghost?
Is Morpheus going to go mad after his whole belief structure was ripped from under him?
Is Agent Smith one of the best villians on screen ever?

etc. etc.

So where to from here? Well... it is not all over the place, there is a feeling or purpose. Epitomised by this is the fights. You are not sitting there going, "Oh look at that CG crap" or "What is the point when Neo can fly away?" You are actually caring about the fights, wondering what the outcome will bring. There were two goals, one was obvious,

The saving of Zion.
I think the Dock fight sequence will a) Go down as one of the great Sci-Fi battles filmed and b) show a certain Mr Lucas that doing stuff with computers doesn't mean it has to be so fucking sterile.

This sequence kicked out some cliches, while holding dear to others, but all the while, you start to care about the Zionites...... whereas in Reloaded you didn't care about their tribal-dancing sweaty-arse bodies, now you cared that these people were going to be destroyed.

They fight for survival and man, have they got some surviving to do.... Watch for the marvellous swarming of the sentinels, outstanding stuff.

The other goal...
...can only be described as...... what the fuck is Neo going to do..... He finds out more about the Matrix and the Machines as well as himself, but he is unsure of what he needs to do.... When he does.... he puts it all on the line.

This section is where I disagree with the handling of Neo..... but it would rude of me to tell the writers they got it wrong. All I can say is that, possible HUGE spoiler in next paragraph........ close the browser NOW...

Why is Neo a superhuman in the real world? for me this breaks the magic of the Matrix, the duality within one persons mind (The Matrix) compared to the persons physicicality (The Real World). Making Neo almost super-human in the real world spoils this idea for me, it is too "happy ending " for me, I liked the idea of being only human..... but... it does not spoil the movie......

The script is tight, the acting on the whole very good and the look and feel is just unbelievably good. This makes reloaded looked rushed on the effects departmartment... because in the last 4 months.... they have nailed this stuff.

I have tickets for a Gold Class session next Wednesday night, after droidy has finished exams.... in fact the thing I am most disappointed with is the fact I saw it without her tonight. Although if I did see if with her... you won't have this review...... because I would be saying all this, and more, to her. Thanks to droidy for letting me go without you.... I owe you. To people at work...... stay away from me... I'll want to talk. [:

Comments

Great synopsis. I picked up on the same 'quality' aspects of the film (in compare to Reloaded), however:

I loathed it.

I loathed it so much I am angry at it.

Most of all because:
- Where were Trinity and Neo for half the movie? Fuck the storyline - I paid to see Trinity and Neo. I don't "care" about the other characters - I just want Trinity and Neo actionn and thumping house music with stylie fight sequences.
- What the FUCK is with the Jesus shit?! :-o I beg to differ DK - I feel the ENTIRE film was a 'Lucasism' in that respect. Crucifix position? Light spooling out of bodies in the form of a cross? FFS! What's next - Neo's NOT dead and will rise three days later? Will we be treated to "Matrix:Resurrection" next?? :-o
- I thought the Matrix was a "corny american lines repeated by other characters"-free zone?
- No Twins at the nightclub?
I know it must be a nightmare to write an ending for a trilogy, but does that mean it has to be CORNBALL??

And the worst part is, I shelled out $35 for the priveledge of enduring it in GoldClass.
I believe it to be the biggest load of arse/cop out piece of bullshit excuse that I can remember.

Revolutions is to (what I believe was born of the 1st Matrix film) the Matrix what Ewoks and JaJa are to StarWars - only worse.

I feel like a total sucker for money I spent on merchandise surrounding the film, believeing I was buying into a great Agatha Christie-ish perplexity.

Fuck you, Wachowski's. If I want Muppets In Space, I expect it to be named as such.

I'm off to watch the MTV Movie awards version - JT and Will Ferrel have me glued to the screen in stitches every time - I'd rather 2 hours of THEM thanks.

on your points....

- Instead of the usual edit back and forth between the two story threads, zion and neo/trin, they chose to play on in it's entireity and then show you the other. This was more of an unusual choice than fucking up the story, in my opinion of course. It plays well for me, because they put Zion in the worst position possible and then let you hang.,...
- "You are my own personal Jesus Christ" - Matrix. The Jesus/Neo thing has been in from the first film. The symholism is knee deep throughout all the films.... As to Neo not being dead.... Neo is dead. His spirit(¿) lives on as part of the matrix, possibly.... or if you take the Gibson view... like Wintermute/Neuromancer, the union of smith/neo becomes the matrix.... have to think more on this, but Neo is dead.
- um..... yeah.... some lines (re: around protection of Zion, were dodgy.... I did mention clichés)
- I've said it before, but no-one listens. The corporeal forms of the twins were destroyed in the explosion. We saw them as ghosts escaping, but they lost their ability to switch in and out. However cool.... they were one-dimensional characters anyway [:

It could ended two ways, the way it did or with the discovery of the matrix-within-a-matrix way...

Knowing that the Matrix MMORPG was coming out, set AFTER revolutions, a long time ago... the whole matrix within a matrix looked like it wouldn't happen. The matrix was never going to be destroyed in revolutions....

There is complexity in the ending, I do not think it is some trite ending they made up at the last minute (although I still think the Matrix (trhe orig) was written as a single film and then left open for more...)

...anyway.... I knew upon walking out that people would be annoyed.... hell I was annoyed at some things, as I mentioned above, but I still enjoyed it.

Revolutions Rocked !!!!

GREAT MOVIE (with alot of unanswered questions) or at least ..... can anybody say it aint over until the Oracle sings?

Bear with my comments, I'm venting ... they go from concern/questions to final comments.

I went into Revolutions expecting (don't know why I'd do that?) a more "black & white" closure and came out annoyed and bothered. The Wachowski's did it, they really did it. They pissed us off so we could find the holes in the story line. Is Revolutions the ending? Of course not. That's like watching the original Matrix and thinking that was it, game over. But not knowing that it was a trilogy, The Matrix is far from over. The Matix: Resurrection (going along with biblical terminology) does have a nice ring to it.

Please .... the train station ..... don't humiliate me ever again !!!!! That scene could've been cut down to 4 mintues instead of 15 mintues.

Why does Neo have super powers outside the Matrix? He's the one, ya, the One inside the Matrix WITH super powers. On the outside he is still only human and labeled as The One. He is only human because of his death, or did he die?(we just left Neo being taking into the machines not moving). Were they that clear that Neo is dead? Maybe, maybe not.

Trinity dies, just like that? Disappointed! I would've thought Trin could have died by something else in the Machine world (other than a ship crash). She could've stepped infront of an attacking machine (sacrificing herself for Neo). Oh Well.

How come Agent Smith, with the battle between Neo, didn't use his .... "How can you talk, if you're unable to speak?" bit? Ya know, make Neo transfer into a the one (without hands, feet, eyes, etc.)

How can Agent Smith take over the Matrix (with ease) and be easily exploded from within? Obviously the battle between Smith and Neo was never going to end, ever. Why prolong the fight scene? My opinion of course.

O.K. - now the great parts of the movie, It's a fantastic "Empire Strikes Back" Feel. Didn't feel like "Jedi" at all. Full of surprises !!! A roller coaster when the battle gets started. The battle between the machines and Zion .... SPECTACULAR!!!! The battle between Bain and Neo in the real world .... EXCELLENT! The machine world ... Eerie and Creepy (exactly what I expected).

Ya see, it's not over. There are so many uncertainties to The Wachowski's plan. They did Revolutions just to Piss us off so we can be sitting here posting comments on how bothered we are. But are we all really bothered? I was for a short time after the credits started to roll. But for right now? REVOLUTIONS ROCKED !!!

... I liked the third one... I still like the first one most ... and while the ending was pretty much 'happily ever after'-ish, meh... whatever. I don't very often walk out of a movie not liking it, unless there were scenes that made me not want to watch ... most of these involve things that make me cringe, or things that are there to scare me or otherwise freak me out.

Having said that, I was a bit tired watching the movie last night - final exam was that afternoon, and though we were in gold class (thanks to A & I for the tix at christmas last year!) everything felt a bit ... big for me to be sitting so close to the screen.

I'll wade into this.

As a sci-fi movie I enjoyed it. As the Matrix finale I was disappointed.

I agree with most of what Decay said. The Zion battle was fantastic and all the CG was spot on. I just found that, overall, it felt less like The Matrix and more like Starship Troopers or Terminator. What I loved about the first movie (The Matrix that is) was the experience of looking through Neo's eyes as he discovered that his world was actually this thing called the Matrix, and then discovering that he had these wondrous abilities. When he first learnt kung-fu, first beat Morpheus, dodged bullets and saw the matrix code and beat an Agent - that was good stuff. I guess everything was just new and exciting the first time around.

I was also puzzled by Neo's new abilities in the 'real world'. If you subscribe to the biblical analogy though (Jesus had skills on earth and in heaven) maybe it makes sense?

Obviously they left the story a little open at the end, if not for more movies, then at least for all the spin-off games, books and comics that are inevitable. I know it is difficult to produce a good ending that satisfies the viewer without being patronising, but wanted to see a little more of what happened next; I really wanted to see those characters who had doubted and mocked Neo and Morpheus (Roland, Commander Lock) get their just desserts (humble pie?). I wanted to see what they would do with Merovingian, but I guess he is a standard programmatic feature in the Matrix so lives to fight another day too.

I saw it last weekend and the more I think about it now, the more I think I need to see it again and see what it is like the second time around. Decay, what did you think the 2nd time around?

I finally got around to seeing Revolutions. I must say I actually liked it a lot. I expected complete crap (Reloaded had prepared me), so I was quite surprised. The battle for the port was very good, though the machines obviously have never played Galaga!!

The bits I disliked were when things slowed down and people were just being people. Then the inadequacies of the script showed through. Also the patriotic flag waving "If we have to die, then give them hell first" shit was just that... shit.

I got the distinct feeling the film was written with Reloaded almost pushed aside. The French dude? Aside from setting up a nice battle he was pretty much a throw away from the previous film. The train station. Can't say I cared a lot. The ending. I quite liked it. It made some sort of sense (I think).

All in all I really liked the film. Matrix was a good film, but it was never particularly brilliant. The writers are good when things move, but they really can't write for normal conversation. I think Revolutions was the best we could hope for, and it tidies up the series quite well. Having said that, I don't think I'll be watching it again (or any of the others, to be honest).
