Lord of the Rings : Return of the King

What is the first thing you do in a new city? That's right... go see Return of the King.

Afetr driving for a full day from Las Vegas to San Francisco, 10:30am on the 18th of December 2003, we saw the final in Peter Jackson's take on Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. I mention the date and time in full to piss off all the people at home that don't get it until after Christmas....

The short of it? Loved it.... displaces Kill Bill Vol. 1 from Decay's movies of the year list.

The not quite as short? This movie apparantly was 3 and a half hours long... the other movies had sections where it felt a little slow, this time however, it does not feel long at all and quite frankly I still want more.... more dammit!

The rest.... [:

I've read the books a couple of times in my almost 30 years, so I knew what was going to happen etc., but I couldn't remember specifics or the little fan-boyish bit that others have talked about (on the 'net that is). The lose of Saruman's scenes I did notice though, there is no real finish to Saruman, I guess we'll have to wait for the extended edition DVD, which is annoying, because as I said, the movie did not feel long, another 7.5 minutes (rumoured to be the length of the scenes) would not have numbed people's arses anymore.

Gollum continued to be great, showing the young Smeagol with mate Deagol was good. Shelob was excellent, beware those with arachniphobia..... The battle for Minas Tirith was exciting and awesome, and I mean that in it's real sense, I was fulll of awe over what Peter Jackson and Weta and everyone making the film did here, I won't gush much more..... it was brilliant.....

Would have loved to see the scouring of the shire, but alas PJ has said this was NEVER filmed, so no DVD extra, no nothing....

I'm trying to be spoiler free.... so I'll just do some points that people can take up in the comments when the film opens in Australia.

  • Entish Beer?
  • Editing/scene changes at end
  • Aragon's sword/timing

Droidy and I will see it again in Vancouver (where we leave to go tomorrow) and probably again at home..... see it.....

(I apologise for the dodgy quick review, but I'm using a 'net cafe machine and can't switch windows to do some spell checking or even take time to re-read this... DK)

There is something vaguely ironic about you going to see a film of this title (a fact I'm sure I am not the first to notice). I must the LOTR is one of those book-to-film conversions that renews my faith in the film industry (though I confess I have only seen the first one so far).
It's good to hear you guys are having fun over there.

Arachniphobia - well I won't be seeing that on the big screen.

Harry Potter was bad enough.

I'll wait until I can watch it on a 34cm TV or in a tiny window on the computer where you can't make out the spiders thank you very much!!!

Sorry to yell.... but see this movie at the cinema, your brain will love you....

They people down at WETA must have studied spiders a long time for this film. The movement is very life like, I had a big grin on my face every time it was on the screen.

Come to think of it, I had a big grin on my face for most of the film.

I think the third is the best of all three movies. Who seconds this motion?

I really love Elijah Wood, my ex boyfriend kinda looked like him, and he kinda had a bit of Harry Potter in his features too...pretty damn cute!!! Lord Of The Rings is a hardcore series of movies, and i love every single one of em....bloody inspirational....
