Basement Jaxx - Kish Kash-ing Remedies!

I must say, I wasn't all that enthused once I had heard Kish Kash...but love it now that I have seen the concert...

Well, a couple of weeks ago when I had bought, ahem, ok, you got me, bought, burnt and returned Basement Jaxx's latest album Kish Kash and after one listen, I was skeptical...it wasn't the usualy sound, more alternatively sounded house melodies...but then, actually, it grew on me with each listen and the concert gave the album justice...

Anyway, what is it when you go to concerts these days? The door people keep your ticket and you have to get it after the show! How rude! I collect my tickets, I have a nice memoribila collections happening, why can't they just tear of the stub??
Anyway...back to the concert...

Em and I found a spot on the dancefloor - it was pretty crowded but we wanted to be in the heart of the action...then at about 10.30ish Basement Jaxx came on! Yay! They opeend up with their latest song "Good Luck"...I must say, the black chics that they have singing for them are way funky and really entertaining. They also had a white girl, 2 black dudes who remind me of characters out of Cool Runnings and 3 black singers in total, plus a guy on drums and another guy playing something else. Pretty full on show.

They played a few songs from Kisah Kash, with the ladies chaging their wild outfits, they did a bit of a mix of Missy Elliot's "Work It" which was cool then came "Red Alert" and the crowd sung along. So, Basement Jaxx covered some RnB...one point thus far to show that they just don't want to be known as House.

The singers looked like they were having a great time, running around, dancing, laughing, truly entertaining. There were cool light and a background screen showing pictures and words. All good. All very effective and I think gave the crowd that extra enthusiasium.

Em and I were getting quite crowded but enjoyed jumping up and down with teh crowd and feeling the floor moving under our feet.

There were a couple fo time when teh Basement Jaxx trio did what DJs do - remix songs - one mix they did was having the Whitestripe's "Seven Nation Army" backgroud beats and the bluck dude singing 50 Cent's "In Da Club" mixed in with something else that I didn't quite recognise. Alternative acheived here!

They played some slow stuff, kind of like the "Cafe Del Mar" type like music, and they also played my fav song from Kish Kash - real funky song. For a song the white girl came out dressed in a black cat woman tight suit, and the black girl had a leesh around ehr neck...hmmm...if I wasn't at a concert I could have thought I was *somewhere* else...

They performed some more songs, did more DJ duo mixes, some songs had a bit of an alternative kick in them.

Then there was this really long intro and Em and I were completely stumped as to what they were going to play, as was the rest of the crowd...then all of a sudeen they belt out "where's your head at?" and the crowd went psycho! Jumping up and down, hands int he air, screaming, cheering...it was the best man...all the singers came out and extra people, they were all running around, jumping, having a great time. It was fun that song!

And that was it!

But as history dictates there is always a fake encore, the crowd was cheering "basement jaxx", stamping their feet, whistling...we clearly wanted more. And more we got. They came back sung some more, a bit of rap, and the last song for the ngiht was "Jump and Shout" from their first album, "Remedy".

But still, the crowd wanted more...more stamping of feet, more clapping, more whistling, more cheering, more chanting "Basement Jaxx"....

But as history dictates, I think you have to be an old old band to give two encores and that was it after 'Jump and Shout'.

It was a great concert, and Basement Jaxx definately had different genres influencing their music. The black girls and buys were totally cool. They deliverd, they pleased.

I got my ticket and as Em and I headed back to the car in the rain we sung "When I say Basement you say Jaxx! Basement JAXX Basement JAXX!"

When I say Basement, you say Jaxx! Basement! JAXX! Basement! JAXX! ...that part of the concert was fun for me. A very enjoyable night, I agree. The singers were really funky and had plenty of energy and personality, 'Where's Your Head At?' was totally sick, the new songs sounded awesome and the big screens with visual displays were too cool and very cheeky, there was some pretty nice footage in those that almost distracted from the music itself!

'twas good to see DJs who know how to entertain a crowd and have fun - they really did put on a great show. It was a lighthearted, fun evening for all music fans in attendance!

Whoa! What an awesome sounding gig! I'm extremely jealous.

I was the same with Kish Kash. I admit to being a little disappointed at first due to there not being an end-to-end wall of throbbing house, but after a few listens I'm enamoured.

As one reviewer aptly put it:
"..the first half of the record takes the energy, velocity and thrust of "Where's Yo Head At?" and adds a head-swimming number of sonic details, resulting in a series of dense dance-pop gems; the second half is more placid, built on acoustic guitars and broken hearts more than electronic dreams and broken beats."

Good to hear that the self-righteous and solitary attitude of the 'DJ Performer' wasn't anywhere to be seen at the concert - sounds like you got your money's worth. :)

Speaking of which, I've scored a comp to Good Vibrations (no not this one http://www.goodvibrations.com.au/) on Sunday. Very happy about that ($90's worth).
Looking forward to seeing Moloko, Soul II Soul, Lee Scratch Perry & Mad Professor, Asian Dub Foundation, Blackalicious, Gang Starr and Nitin Sawhney to name a few.

Oh and, realising that you're into prog house B (I figured I was alone in the RS community on that one!) you might enjoy these:
http://zion.ru.ac.za/music.php

Highly recommend Set4 (which begins with Fluke's "Zion" from Matrix Reloaded) and Set6 which contains Sasha, BT, Underworld, and Bedrock and is nicely HouseTrance/GlobalUnderground-ey. (GU: http://www.globalunderground.co.uk/discography_view_label.php?which_label=1)

Great to see some release-quality mixes from an unknown, giving the likes of Paul Oakenfold, John Digweed and Dave Seaman a run for their money imho.

It's nice and handy in that the links are straight to an MP3, so you can either stream them or 'save as' and listen as they download.

Enjoy :-)

do spill, Sambo, what was it like to see Moloko live? + Other highlights of Good Vibrations? Would have been a good day out by the looks of things.

hmmm...do tell about good vibrations.

em and i went to 'vibes on a summers day' couple years back...

when it comes to music i am a bit of an alrounder...

i am being somewhat misconeived a bit...and i am feeling the pressure to live up to the angel script writer who dances to prog house and photographer......

Oh shit - sorry! /me thumps side of head

Was great from all accounts.. was a tad erm.. tipsy *cough
I remember totally going off tho, so I'm hoping I wasn't alone in that respect else I should feel a weeny bit embarrassed ;p

Moloko were on pretty late in the piece and to be honest I remember looking up and seeing them on stage but not remembering when it was exactly that they had arrived there. Ahh well. It was definitely 'live' if that helps - no apparant signs of miming all day.

b - release da pressure! I get easily excited by music, but my tastes here @ RS are pretty solitary I think. Thought I'd found a connection.. ahh well.

*hic*
