Why Do I Read The News |
[ February 25, 2004 ] |
There is
something very scary about reading an article titled: "Bush
to Back Gay Marriage Ban Amendment. It's not
the fact that these story rates a mention, it's the seriousness with
which it's treated that worries me.
Basically the story concerns a push for a constitutional amendment in the USA to ban
gay marriages. On first reading this seems pretty stupid, but
maybe that's just me. However, regardless of whether it is
important that a countries bedrock legal document contains discussions
about same sex marriage or not, the worrying thing is statements like: "Unless action is taken, we can expect
more arbitrary court decisions, more litigation, more defiance of the
law by local officials — all of which adds to uncertainty,"
G.W.Bush.
This is so important we're not going to take a knee-jerk reaction to this,"
House Majority Leader Tom DeLay.
Can someone explain what is going on? I thought I
had some kind of handle on the way people thought, and now I am reading
that one of the pressing issues in society today, and one that may lead
to anarchy if not addressed immediately, is whether same sex marriages
should be legal! It looks like the wars on drugs and terrorism
have been called off due to lack of interest, so now we have the war on
same-sex marriages. Expect a troop carrier to descend on Sydney
any day now...
