The films that shape
"Given that we know that we are all mindless followers of television, and that original thought is something left to boardrooms full of script writers, I wonder what films have really had an impact on me."  This thought came to me while riding to work the other day (I ride a motorbike, and, while avoiding cars trying to separate me from my bike, or tram lines covered in water that want to introduce me to the road, I tend to think a lot.  There's not much else to do).  We all talk about films and TV, and much of our conversation is sprinkled with phrases and images from these things, but I wonder how many actually made a BIG impact on the way we lived our lives.

So, that's my question to you, answer it if you dare: What films have made a significant impact on your life, and what is the impact (I'm avoiding TV for now).

Here's my list (I don't think it is exhaustive).

Jaws - Gave me a lifelong fear of swimming... anywhere.  I even find walking through puddles hard.
Nico, above the law - introduced me to the violent side of Aikido, and converted me to it instantly.  Also taught me the merits of wooden acting and supreme arrogance.
Bowling for Columbine - really scared me.  It showed me an insight into the minds of a significant portion of the worlds population.  A well armed proportion.
Life of Brian - Introduced me to Monty Python.
Exorcist - showed me the wonderful world of special effect make-up and started a lifelong interest in different ways of making people look horrid via the use of rubber and fake blood.

I'm sure there are more.  This is the best I can think of so far.  As you can see, this is by no means a list of the worlds greatest films.  In fact few of those above would make it to my to 10, but they all had a major effect.

I look forward to seeing what made you the person you are.......

Jaws also was a big one for me, but not for the same reasons. Yeah its probably no coincidence that I'm not a big fan of swimming in the ocean but Spielberg took hold of my head with both his hands, cracked it open and poured in a love of films in the first 25 minutes of that film. The editing alone is SUPERB. Almost without par for its time - especially since it was edited in Verna Fields summer house and done mostly by hand. It was massively over budget, they kept waiting for the studio to shut them down because they were only gettin an hour or so of filming done each day. But he turned a better than average book into my all time favourite film - even if he didn't kill off Hooper like the book does. I could go on about this film, buuuut I think I've said my piece.

Being one who doesn't really watch many movies, there's still a few that stick in my mind ...

The Crow, while watching this with Decay. I do remember being in tears at the end of the movie, happy tears because I was, and am still with Decay. yay!

The Matrix. Because it didn't make me cringe. I seem to have a very low cringe tolerance level ...

The Three Colours Trilogy. I watched this on SBS, with very dodgy reception ... I still love the music, but it's been a long time since I've seen any of the movies...

Earth Girls Are Easy - because it started a life long fascination with Geena Davis, and her marvellous breasts!!! And in the movie, she's a nail tech; I’m a nail tech, life imitating art? naaaaa

Clue - it taught me there is more one way to kill a house full of people

Scream - Showing that horror can have a sense of humour
