This is a story about a Shiny Thing ™

Decay and I are on holiday at the moment; currently, we're nearing the end of our first week of two ... What do a couple of slightly geeky people do on their break?

We bring home a box ...

Take pics ...

while we open it...

and collect more boxes ...

... on the way to adding a new member to the collection of computers at the house of rantspace.

This is squirt, a G4 1.2GHz 12" iBook. This is not a switch story, because I still have to use both at work and at home, but squirt sure is cute and shiny and portable! The name squirt is because Trauma/Lumpy and his shuttle PC didn't want the name, and because squirt is related to Turtle, and SuperErnie.

Firing up squirt right out of the box was pretty painless, it found the wireless network, we chucked in appropriate bits of information and it played nicely ... w00t!

Decay officially rocks though, because although stuff was pretty easy to configure and make work, the windows printer sharing was a bit of a pain. So, after a bit of fiddling about, squirt now plays nicely with the Printer/Scanner that is connected to SuperErnie ...

What else did we do? We got a bag for squirt to travel in ...

Meet ... the Sheep Scarer ...

Decay also scored another Crumpler Bag. This one's known as the Formal Lounge

Whatever we did to decide to go to the clearance store in Hawthorn was definitely worth it, as we got about 15% off the retail price from the Sheep Scarer since it was floor stock.

Crumpler make very nice, sturdy, and appropriate sized bags ... when we were in USA, the times we got our bags checked at the airports were also the times that the bag checkers wanted to look at the bags more than they wanted to look at the contents of the bags ... there are pockets for everything you could think of, and then some for those you haven't thought of needing yet.

We also chucked some extra RAM into squirt so it could feel a little supercharged compared to the stock model ... pays to check around prices ... if we'd purchased it built into squirt, the extra RAM would've been double the price we actually paid, purchasing from CPL, as geeks of the SE suburbs of Melbourne are wont to do ...

So, now that you've met squirt and squirt's portable home, reckon it's shiny enough? (:

How's the sheep scarer working out for you? I have the same laptop (pretty much) and need to get a backpack so as not to pull my arm out of its socket while commuting (I have a shoulder bag). Enough room in there?

The Sheep Scarer is pretty much designed to fit a 12" iBook in there... the next size up fits a 15" iBook/Powerbook ...

Aside from the laptop, I can fit in a couple of textbooks and a metal pencilcase in there... not huge amounts but it's enough so people aren't going to tell me I'm carrying too much and it'll hurt my back.

Cool. Thanks for the info. I'll probably either get one of those in red or a Tom Bihn Buzz.
