Guru G
Corporate schmoozing

What happens when you take Guru G out of the hippy-clothing store and put her in an office? She becomes Corporate G!

And I have found if you get along with the right people the benefits can be worth leaving the tie-dye for weekend wearing only.

Wednesday this week (27/1/05) while trying hard not to fall asleep during a “processes work shop”, I received a call from the HR manager at my work, asking me if I wanted to go to the tennis that night. Apparently there is a company that wants to get business from the company that I work for (not naming any names), and they wanted to take the HR manager and the IT manager to the tennis as a schmooze. Well the IT manager could not make it at the short notice and the rest of her team were also unavailable, but the HR manager (from now on will be known as HRM) and I are friends and she knows that I love going to the Australian Open and have not been able to go this year – so she asked me.

I am a supervisor in my department, more than an average office gimp, but still have no sway that schmoozing would help.

Anyway, I travelled into Richmond with HRM and we parked near the MCG and walked to the tennis centre. We met the representatives from Company X at the front gate and they handed us tickets. This company do have corporate seating at the Aust Open but for some reason were unable to get us tickets for this night, so they went out and bought tickets!!! Semi final tickets!!! Bought the day of the match!!! They must really want our business!!!

No one in the group had had dinner, so they bought HRM and me food and beer (mmm Heineken). We then took our seats and they bought us another round of beers and also ice creams.

Now for the people who do not know the match that was on the night of 27/1/05 it was Safin v Federer. And OMG, I am sooooo glad I was there, what a match!!! Four and a half hours of the best tennis I have witnessed in person.

Being Corporate G can have its advantages!!!
